Rebecca Miano is a distinguished lawyer and corporate executive renowned for her leadership in the energy sector and her significant contributions to Kenya’s economic development. She currently serves as the Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife in Kenya.
Early life and education
Miano pursued her education with dedication and excellence. She earned a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree from the University of Nairobi, followed by the Advocates Training Programme at the Kenya School of Law. Furthering her legal expertise, she obtained a Master of Laws (LL.M) in Comparative Law from the Australian National University.
Professional career
Miano’s professional journey commenced in the legal field, where she gained experience at “Musyoka Annan & Company Advocates” in Nairobi and later at “Slater and Gordon,” a law firm in Queensland, Australia. In 1998, she joined Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) as an Assistant Legal Officer. Over the years, she ascended through various roles, including Assistant Company Secretary and Director of Legal Affairs and Company Secretary, positions she held from 2008. In August 2017, she was appointed Acting Managing Director and CEO of KenGen, becoming the first woman to lead the company. Her appointment was confirmed in November 2017, marking a significant milestone in Kenya’s corporate leadership.

During her tenure at KenGen, Miano was instrumental in steering the company towards sustainability and diversification, solidifying its position as the largest electricity producer in East Africa. Her leadership was characterized by a strategic focus on renewable energy and corporate governance.
Political leadership
In September 2022, Miano transitioned into public service when she was appointed as the Cabinet Secretary for East African Community, Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASALs), and Regional Development. In this capacity, she played a pivotal role in regional integration and development initiatives. Her leadership was further recognized in October 2023 when she was appointed as the Cabinet Secretary for Investments, Trade, and Industry, a position she held until July 2024. In August 2024, she was appointed as the Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife, where she continues to influence Kenya’s economic and environmental policies.
