Mwangi was born in 1962 in Kangema, Murang’a County, Kenya. Raised by his widowed mother, Grace Wairimu, along with six siblings, his early life was marked by financial challenges. Despite these hardships, Mwangi learned the values of discipline, hard work, humility, and community service from his mother. He attended Nyagatugu Primary School and Ichagaki Secondary School on a government scholarship before proceeding to Kagumo High School for his A-levels, where he focused on economics, English literature, and geography. Mwangi later earned a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Nairobi and qualified as a Certified Public Accountant. He also completed the Advanced Management Programme at IESE Business School in Barcelona, Spain, which further refined his business acumen.
Career
Mwangi’s career began in auditing, with stints at Price Waterhouse and Ernst & Young. His transformative journey started in 1991 when he joined Equity Building Society (EBS), a struggling micro-finance institution, as Finance and Operations Director.
