Dr. Gideon Maina Muriuki, MBS, CBS, is the Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Co-operative Bank of Kenya, a leading financial institution in East Africa. With over three decades of experience in banking and finance, Muriuki has been instrumental in transforming the bank into a regional powerhouse.

Early life and education

Born on September 1, 1964, in Mung’aria village, Tetu, Nyeri County, Muriuki was raised in a family of entrepreneurs. His parents, Ben Muriuki Gakenge and Beatrice Muthoni Muriuki, instilled in him the values of hard work and integrity. He began his education at Kaigonde Primary School, later transferring to Kiganjo Primary School. He completed his Kenya Certificate of Education (KCE) at Kagumo High School in 1981 and proceeded to the same institution for his ‘A’ Level education, graduating in 1983. Muriuki earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics from the University of Nairobi in 1988.

Professional career

Muriuki commenced his banking career in 1989 as a Graduate Trainee at Barclays Bank of Kenya, where he served until 1992. He then joined Standard Chartered Bank, working there from 1992 to 1996. In 1996, he joined the Co-operative Bank of Kenya as a Senior Corporate Manager. By 1999, he had risen to the position of Director, Corporate and Institutional Banking. In 2001, he was appointed Managing Director, and later Group Managing Director and CEO, a role he has held since then.

Leadership and achievements

Under Muriuki’s leadership, the Co-operative Bank of Kenya has experienced remarkable growth. The bank’s asset base has expanded from approximately KSh 24 billion in 2001 to over KSh 600 billion in recent years. Profits have also surged, with a profit before tax of KSh 22.6 billion reported in 2021.

Muriuki’s leadership has been recognized both locally and internationally. In 2014, he was named CEO of the Year – Africa by the International Banker. He has also received several national honors, including the Order of the Grand Warrior (OGW) in 2005, the Moran of the Order of the Burning Spear (MBS) in 2011, and the Chief of the Order of the Burning Spear first-class (CBS) in 2017. In 2021, he was awarded the Banking CEO of the Year by EMEA Finance – African Banking Awards.

Academic and professional recognition

Muriuki holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics and is a Fellow of the Kenya Institute of Bankers. He has been honored with an Honorary Doctorate in Business Management in 2011 and a Doctorate of Humane Letters (Honoris Causa) from the Co-operative University of Kenya in 2022.

Personal life

Muriuki is married to Joyce Wanjiku Muriuki, and together they have five children. He is a committed Christian and actively participates in church activities at Nairobi Pentecostal Church, Woodley.
