Abdi Mohamed, a distinguished Kenyan banker with over 30 years of experience in the financial sector, currently serves as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Managing Director (MD) of Absa Bank Kenya PLC, a position he assumed on May 1, 2023.
Educational background
Mohamed’s academic journey laid a solid foundation for his banking career. He earned a Bachelor of Commerce (Honors) degree from Kenyatta University, followed by a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Edith Cowan University. To further enhance his leadership skills, he completed an Advanced Management Programme at IMD Business School in Switzerland.

Mohamed’s career in banking began in 1994 as a bank teller, and he progressively advanced through various roles across multiple regions, including Eastern and Southern Africa, the Middle East, and parts of Europe.
Prior to his current role at Absa Bank Kenya, he held several key positions within the Absa Group including Managing Director of Absa Bank Tanzania. In this capacity, Mr. Mohamed was recognized as the best banking CEO in Tanzania by Global Brands Magazine in 2020 and 2021, reflecting his effective leadership and commitment to excellence.
He also held the position of Acting Managing Executive for Retail and Business Banking, Africa Regional Operations. This role encompassed oversight of multiple geographies where Absa operates within Africa, demonstrating his extensive experience in retail and consumer banking.
