The Kenya National Examination Council, commonly abbreviated as KNEC, is the examination body tasked with the responsibility of overseeing national examinations in Kenya.
In line with the recent digitization of services in the country, KNEC launched an online portal that allows candidates and institutions to register and check their exam results online.
The KNEC portal also has several other performance, supervision, and monitoring-related features.
The portal was designed for candidates at primary (KCPE) and high school (KCSE) levels since KNEC conducts the exams for both.
Using the KNEC Portal
The KNEC portal has various functionalities for institutions, students, examiners, and invigilators.
Here is how you can use the KNEC Portal;
1. KNEC Portal registration for candidates
The registration period runs from the beginning of January to the end of March.
There is also a pre-registration period that runs from the beginning of November to the end of December.
Here is how candidates can access the KNEC portal and register candidates for KCPE and KCSE exams.
Step 1: Ensure you have the student’s details, such as their names and passport photographs.
Step 2: Visit the KNEC registration portal and select the appropriate student exam level (KCPE or KCSE).
Step 3: Log in using the institution’s KNEC portal username and password Navigate to the ‘register candidates’ tab and click on the tab labelled ‘select.’
Step 4: Click on ‘enter new candidate’ and choose ‘continue.’ For KCSE students, click on the ‘enter previous exam details’ tab and input the student’s KCPE details.
Step 5: Complete the registration by inputting the required details. These include their name, index number (last three digits), entry code, citizenship status, birth certificate number, and disability status.
You will also be asked to upload a passport photo of the student. For KCSE candidates, you will be required to select the subjects that the student has chosen.
It is important to note that;
- Private candidates cannot be registered using the process outlined above. They will need to download the registration forms and present them to the area education officer.
- Once the registration period ends, name amendments can only be done after the exam results are out. The headteacher should write explaining the origin of the mistake and pay Ksh 3,000 for every erroneous entry.
How to edit student’s registration details on the KNEC Portal
Step 1: Visit the portal and log in using the institution details.
Step 2: Click on the ‘register candidates’ tab and select ‘Edit existing candidates.’
Step 3: In the new window, input the last three digits of the candidate’s index number (the one whose details you wish to edit)
Step 4: Click on ‘find’ and edit the details as necessary.
How to download a result slip from the KNEC Portal
Every time the examination body releases results, the candidates who sat that year’s KNEC exams can check their performance online.
Here is how to check results on the KNEC portal
- Visit the portal and select the ‘online result slip’ tab for KCPE results or the ‘online results’ tab for KCSE results.
- You will be asked to input your index number, after which the KNEC downloads system will redirect you to a page with your results.
2. KNEC Portal registration for invigilators
Those looking to be contracted as examination invigilators must be registered on the KNEC portal. This is done through a part of the portal known as the Contracted Professionals System.
The main aim of the system is to ensure that KNEC captures correct, accurate and timely details of all KNEC examiners who are involved in the supervision, invigilation, and management of examinations.
The details captured on the examiners’ portal help KNEC to efficiently process invigilators’ claims for payments, monitoring their attendance during the examinations period and streamlining all conflict resolution processes.
Here is how invigilators register on the KNEC Portal.
Step 1: Visit the contracted professionals system and click on ‘create account.’
Step 2: Enter your mobile number and ensure to input the country code.
Step 3: You will receive a message with your login details and a link to access the CP2 system.
Step 4: You will be presented with a guide detailing how to fill out your details, apply for vacancies, and submit your details.
