Cormac McCarthy born Charles Joseph McCarthy Jr. was an American novelist, playwright, and screenwriter.
He wrote twelve novels, spanning the Southern Gothic, Western, and post-apocalyptic genres, as well as multiple short-stories, screenplays, plays and an essay.
McCarthy was born in Providence, Rhode Island, but grew up in Knoxville, Tennessee.
He attended the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, where he studied English and philosophy.
After graduating, he served in the U.S. Air Force for two years.
McCarthy began writing fiction in the early 1960s. His first novel, The Orchard Keeper, was published in 1965.
He went on to publish eleven more novels, including Outer Dark, Child of God, Suttree, Blood Meridian, All the Pretty Horses, No Country for Old Men, The Road and The Sunset Limited.
McCarthy’s novels have been praised for their dark, violent, and lyrical prose.
He has won numerous awards for his work, including the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for The Road and the National Book Award for Fiction for All the Pretty Horses.
McCarthy died on June 13, 2023, at the age of 89.
He was survived by his wife, Jennifer Winkley, and two sons, Cullen and John.
