Also known as USIU, the United States International University Africa, is a private university in Kenya, the largest economy in the East African Community.
The university is accredited by the Commission for Higher Education (CUE) in Kenya and by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) in the United States.
It was founded in 1969.
It offers bachelors, masters and doctoral degrees in its six schools of Humanities and Social Sciences, Business, Science and Technology, Pharmacy and Health Sciences, Graduate Studies, Research and Extension, and Communication, Creative and Cinematic Arts.
Masters courses offered at USIU
1. Online Master of Business Administration
The Online Master of Business Administration program seeks to develop competent, well-trained, and ethically upright managers and leaders to serve in public, private and not-for-profit organizations.
The program is designed to be offered online within 5 semesters (approximately 18 months) to give students the flexibility that does not require them to leave their workstations, or other personal engagements.
The management courses are designed with a strong emphasis on social science theory and practice relevant to student experiences, as well as the local and global environment.
2. Master of Business Administration
The USIU-Africa MBA one and half year program provides knowledge and skills in selected business and management disciplines, through practical experience, case studies, guest speakers, simulations and research issues.
The students are enabled to demonstrate the application of these knowledge and skills in the context of an overall dynamic environment through assignments and projects.
Further, the students demonstrate functionality in dynamic organizations; as change managers and change agents in various employee positions.
3. MBA-Global Business Management
The MBA (Global Business Management) program is a rigorous one year course of study that focuses on globalization, entrepreneurship and applicability.
The program at the Chandaria School of Business is intense and challenging.
Through coursework, interactions with academic experts and leading practitioners, and a network of classmates and alumni in your field, you will build a foundation for genuine success.
4. MBA-Health Leadership and Management
The Health Leadership and Management concentration will specifically equip graduates with a range of competencies, knowledge, skills, attitudes and problem-solving abilities to enable graduates respond to the need for successful management and leadership of health systems.
The concentration has been developed for managers who need professional development and progression in the within dynamic health organizations.
Thus graduates are equipped with the art and science of managing and leading health systems in a dynamic environment.
5. Master of Science in Management and Organizational Development
This is a one year program for middle and senior managers who want to deepen their understanding of the most complex management issues facing leaders worldwide.
The program targets students with work experience background from local and international NGOs, public and private educational institutions, health institutions, faith-based organizations and community based organizations.
6. Master of Arts in International Relations
At the master’s level, the International Relations program stresses an in-depth knowledge of world affairs and a thorough understanding of the research methods and theory of International Relations.
All of the courses within the master’s program offer students a complex and challenging course of study, enhanced by USIU’s international student body and faculty population.
This degree program prepares students for careers in the Foreign Service, diplomacy, government posts, international business, international organizations and private or non-governmental organizations.
7. Master of Arts in Counseling
The mission of counseling psychology program is to prepare graduates to function as effective counselors in a wide variety of settings.
Performing successfully as counselors requires graduates to integrate theoretical and research based knowledge with therapeutic skills and personal characteristics to form an ethical, professional and caring counselor.
The program seeks to prepare graduates for success in clinical, consultative and administrative tasks they will encounter in their practice.
8. Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology
The Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology program is a practitioner model to promote professional mental health services to individuals, couples, groups, institutions and the society at large.
It will provide education and training in professional standards of practice in clinical psychology.
Furthermore, international ethical standards are incorporated into the program, to prepare the student for clinical practice in both the public and private domain worldwide.
9. Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy
Marriage and Family Therapy is a specialized form of psychotherapy that deals with family patterns of behavior, couples relationships, individuals challenges using a systemic framework to nurture change.
They are trained in systems theories and licensed to diagnose mental and emotional diseases.
Marriage and family therapists are trained to work in diverse clinical settings and conduct research in the field.
10. Master of Arts in Criminal and Transitional Justice
The program is tailored to equip students with the advanced understanding of research and practice in criminal justice practices and transitional justice issues in Kenya, East Africa, Africa and globally and the responses thereof.
It focuses on the student’s mastery of major theories of criminal and transitional justice, qualitative and quantitative research methods and policy analysis.
The MA in Criminal and Transitional Justice will equip students with the knowledge to understand the role transitional justice in post-conflict reconstruction efforts and examine the potential contribution that these interventions contribute to post-conflict peace building and reconciliation.
11. Master of Science in Information Systems and Technology
The Masters’ degree in Information Systems Technology (MSc.IST) at USIU aspires to be a world class, and industry-focused graduate program that is targeted at offering a flexible learning environment to IT employees already in the workplace and students aspiring to advance their studies.
The degree program places business and technology at the heart of its curriculum and ethos.
12. Master of Science in Information Security (MSc. ISEC)
This program is to prepare the graduates for the intellectual, analytical and practical challenges of a career in Information Security.
The MSc. ISEC programme will utilize an active, experiential learning environment that prepares students to apply the acquired knowledge of information security, for the betterment of organizational operations and society at large.
The program contributes to the university mission outcomes which are higher order thinking; literacy; global understanding and multicultural perspective; preparedness for career; community service; and leadership and ethics.
13. Masters of Arts in Communication Studies
The program was launched in January 2015 after a rigorous curriculum development process and the hiring of additional highly qualified faculty.
Approved internationally by WASC, the program plays an important role in the professionalization of communications practice in Kenya and the region.
The program focuses on addressing the changing communication landscape marked by convergent technologies.
USIU Masters admissions requirements
The Masters application entrance requirements are as follows;
- Master of Science in Business Administration, Global Business Management & Health and Leadership Management
- Master of Science in Management and Organization Development
- Baccalaureate degree or its equivalent from an accredited institution with a GPA of 2.5 or better
- Work Experience
USIU Masters application procedure
All applicants are expected to satisfy procedures and criteria for admission to USIU-Africa, and to submit acceptable original documents which verify that they have satisfactorily completed all admission requirements.
Students who meet all requirements will be considered for acceptance to the University.
However, meeting the minimum entrance requirements does not guarantee admission into a University program.
Admission is strictly based on merit, and conditionally admitted students must present the required documents within their term of study.
Failure to do so will prohibit further registration.
