Mary Lou Retton is an American retired gymnast who was born on January 24, 1968, in Fairmont, West Virginia.
She trained with Romanian coach Bela Karolyi and won the American Cup and the U.S. Nationals.

Her father was a coal-industry transportation equipment business owner, and her mother signed her up for dance and acrobatics classes at the age of four.
