Stabbing incidents in the U.S
There have been several cases of stabbing incidents in the US, some of which have been motivated by hate crimes. Here are some examples:
In January 2023, a woman in Indiana attacked a victim with a knife because of the victim’s race and national origin.
In April 2023, a man in California attacked Orthodox Jewish pedestrians with a car and a knife, causing serious injuries.
On October 16, 2023, a 71-year-old man in Illinois was charged with stabbing a 6-year-old Muslim boy to death and stabbing his mother multiple times.
The suspect allegedly targeted the victims due to the ongoing Middle Eastern conflict involving Hamas and the Israelis.
It’s important to note that these are just a few examples and there have been many other cases of stabbing incidents in the US.
Some of these incidents may be related to social inequality, abuse of alcohol and drugs, easy access to weapons, social and cultural norms, religious and political reasons among others.
The FBI defines mass murder as an incident where four or more people are killed in a single incident on a continuing basis without any significant time period in between each of the murders.
It’s also worth noting that the Justice Department has opened an investigation into the recent stabbing incident in Illinois and Attorney General Merrick Garland has stated that the department ‘will use every legal authority at our disposal to bring to justice those who perpetrate illegal acts of hate’.
