Barry George is an Englishman who was wrongly convicted of the murder of English television presenter Jill Dando and spent eight years in prison before being acquitted.
He was born in London, England on April 15, 1960; he was the youngest of three children and the only son.
George’s father was a lorry driver and special constable in the Metropolitan police, and his mother was a homemaker.
In July 2001, he was convicted of the murder of Jill Dando and sentenced to life imprisonment, per Sky News.
However, his conviction was later overturned on appeal due to the forensic evidence being discounted, and he was acquitted after a retrial on August 1, 2008.
George’s case is notable for the wrongful conviction and subsequent acquittal, as well as the media attention surrounding the murder of Dando.
Barry George compensation
Following his acquittal, George launched a compensation claim for being a victim of a “miscarriage of justice”.
However, his claim was dismissed by two high court judges in January 2013.
George went to the high court seeking a reconsideration of his case that could have opened the way for him to claim an award of up to £500,000 for lost earnings and wrongful imprisonment.
It was argued on his behalf that the decision to refuse compensation was “defective and contrary to natural justice”.
But Lord Justice Beatson and Mr Justice Irwin ruled that he had “failed the legal test” to receive an award.
George’s compensation bid was based on the fact that he was wrongly convicted of the murder of Jill Dando and spent eight years in prison before being acquitted of the crime.
He argued that he was entitled to compensation for lost earnings and wrongful imprisonment.
However, the court of appeal ruled that the justice secretary was justified not to compensate him.
