Safaricom and Kenya Power came to a partnership agreement that will see this move possible. The service is available for both prepaid and postpaid customers.

According to Safaricom, the initiative would enable their customers to redeem their Bonga Points to purchase tokens or pay their monthly bills at the rate of Ksh 20 cents per point.

This means that if you have 5,000 Bonga points, you can buy tokens worth 1,000, which is equal to 60-65 token units.

To check how many points one will need to pay for their bill, the customer is required to dial *126# select Lipa Na Bonga, then select Bonga Calculator.

The customer will be requested to put in the amount they want to pay and get a response showing the number of points one will need to pay for the bill.

What are Bonga Points?

Bonga points is a loyalty scheme that lets Safaricom Prepay and Postpay subscribers earn points when registered to the programme.

Subscribers earn 1 Bonga point for every 10 Ksh spent on voice calls, SMS, or data; the more you use your Safaricom line, the more points you get and the bigger the rewards.

How to buy KPLC tokes using Safaricom Bonga points

In order to buy KPLC tokens using Safaricom Bonga points, follow the steps below;

  1. Dial *126# on your Safaricom line.
  2. Choose Lipa na Bonga Points.
  3. Enter the KPLC paybill number 888880.
  4. Enter your KPLC meter number.
  5. Enter the amount equivalent to the Bonga Points you want to redeem.
    • You can enter a random figure like 100, 300, 500, etcetera, to see how much you qualify for
  6. Confirm the transaction.
  7. Enter your MPESA pin and wait for the 20-digit KPLC tokens.

How to activate Bonga Points

To actively Bonga Points, follow the steps below;

  1. Dial *126# on your Safaricom line.
  2. Choose option 7; Enroll.

You will receive a confirmation SMS once enrolled and you automatically get 10 free points.

If you register your personal information when enrolling to Bonga, we will automatically reward you with 30 free points.

How to check your Bonga Points

To check your Bonga Points balance, just dial *126# and choose option 3; Check Bonga Points.

How to redeem Bonga Points

You can redeem Safaricom Bonga Points for among others free internet bundles, SMS, airtime, minutes and MMMs.

You can also redeem Bonga Points for various accessories and promotions.

To redeem your Bonga Points;

  1. Dial *126#.
  2. Select option 4; Redeem Bonga Points.

How to transfer Bonga Points

To be able to transfer you Bonga Points, you first need to set up your Bonga PIN if you don’t have one yet.

To transfer Bonga Points, simply dial *126# and select option 6.

You will then be asked to key in the phone number that you wish to transfer the Bonga points to.

The smallest amount of Bonga points that you can send is 50.

How to set up your Bonga Points PIN

To set up your Bonga Points PIN, follow the prompts below;

  1. Dial *126#.
  2. Choose pick option 5; Set New PIN.
  3. Enter national ID or passport number.
  4. Enter the last direct top up amount.
  5. Enter your new PIN and confirm it.
  6. Hit OK to complete the process.
